The Toyota Hilux Champ is a $20k cheap truck for Thailand

Toyota has launched its new Hilux Champ in Thailand, a cute-looking cheap truck that “meets the needs” of local customers.

We were first introduced to the model when it wore the ‘IMV 0’ designation earlier this year at the Japan Mobility Show, where it was put on display in a number of different configurations that included a coffee van, ambulance, off-roader, and more.

Pricing for the Hilux Champ in Thailand is extremely affordable, to say the least, with the model starting at 459,000 baht and ranging up to 577,000 baht, or in New Zealand dollars, between $21,464 and $26,982.

There’s a lot to choose from in terms of specification for the price you pay, with there being short-wheelbase (2750mm) and long-wheelbase (3085mm) variants, two cargo trays, and three different engine types.

With regard to its powertrains, on offer is a 2.0-litre petrol that makes 102kW and 183Nm of torque, a larger 2.7-litre petrol producing 122kW and 245Nm, and a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel making 110kW and 400Nm.

Those who opt for the 2.0-litre petrol are only given a five-speed manual gearbox, while the other two engines can opt for a six-speed automatic transmission, each of which sends power to the rear wheels only.

To keep costs down, Toyota has kept the dress-up parts to a minimum, with the only finish found up front being black plastic. The model also gets halogen headlights, 14-inch steel wheels, and a palette of monotone colours consisting of two different whites, a metallic grey finish, and metallic silver.

Luxuries have also been left out of the interior as electric windows only come on the higher specification models, while vinyl seats are standard. The same goes for the infotainment system, which is non-existent, but the pick-up does come with two speakers so we assume audio entertainment can be accessed through the driver’s instrument panel.

The Hilux Champ does have a few tricks up its sleeve when it comes to customisation though, and that’s thanks to its rear deck which features enough bolt holes to attach whatever your heart desires to it. So whether you want to start your own food truck or go camping, the Toyota Hilux Champ is certainly up to the task.

There’s no indication that the model will go on sale in New Zealand as it is only being offered in Thailand as of writing. However, it’ll no doubt be sold in neighbouring South East Asian countries at a later date.
